How to get the maximum speed from your computer.
« on: May 04, 2009, 11:24:58 PM »
Ok every one know what is a swap file aslo called page file, this is a system file that serve as extra memory.
But we all know that a hard drive is much slower then the memory,so what i recommend here is not for all but it can be for many people that want some speed back from their pc.

I have 2 gb of ram atm which is not very much for vista, but vista with the swap file on was leaving my mem at around 33% used which is very good for vista.
Now that i disable my swap file the mem is always around 58% to 65% used, that`s ok i just have 2 gb.

But the system for me its almost twice faster,it is not a small difference,i can clearly notice the speed of everything i do. biggrin

Ok for people that do not really know in deep what is a swap file,i will explain it with my words.  55%% 55%%
As i said a swap file is extra memory for the pc,what happen when you launch a software, first all important dll will be loaded in the pc memory.
Then all other dll not so important are gonna be be loaded into the swap file, once you close you software the dll from the memory will be un loaded.
But the dll from the swap file will remain in the swap file,if its a software you use frequently.

So what happen with the time with your swap file, well its like a drive since its on your hard drive,so what happen well the swap get fragmented bit by bit since some file are remaining in it and some are un loaded from it,you still fallow me. 55%%

With the time that swap is getting so fragmented that its slowing down your system, most defragmenter software are replacing the swap to a better state, but many are just skipping that damn swap file,so with the time your system can be damn slow and you might not figure out why its so slow.

What i always did & its always worked very good for me is periodically i delete the swap file and re create a new one.
You only need a windows restart and bing you have a new fresh swapfile ready to be used.

Now what am trying now & that`s what make me do this topic its running the windows without a swapfile.
Now listen to me carefully, 55%% if your not doing any intensive task like photoshoping and other big task & have at least 2 gb of ram try to run your pc without a swap file, for a few days you will see that extra speed,& when i say extra speed its something you will notice easily.

Now something people maybe don`t know is vista as been designed to run without swap, what i mean is previously i say all file that goes in the memory are unloaded when your done with the software you previously start.

Well this is true with xp but not in vista,if you use a swap file vista will unload all file from the mem,but if your not using a swapfile vista will preserve some of the frequently dll that are used,so when you close your software and re open it its fucking fast as some of the file are still in the mem. biggrin

Anyway try it and see if you find a difference,my self i find a so nice difference that i will go and by 4 gb of mem tomorrow and will cancel that swap for ever.

I am to lazy atm to post picture on how to turn the swap file off, also don`t be afraid to try it,it is simply not risky to do that.

Unless you have 512 mb of mem i would not recommend to try this, but if you have over 2 gb try it,you might want to get more mem stick to run your system without a swap at all time biggrin %4

how do i get said swap file?

To find out your swap file size or to see if you have one fallow these few step.

Ok first right clic the computer icon on desktop, select properties then clic advance system settings.
In the advanced tabs clic the first setting button

Then clic advanced again & you will get this screen.

Clic change to see where is the swap file, mine is in my f:\ drive as this drive is fast and big. 55%%

See the last pics and step from the top to the bottom select the drive you want a swap file in clic system manage then hit set then clic ok then clic apply and close everything windows should ask you for a system reboot do it then restart all these step to see if your swap is created.

I would say that you already have a swap file in your c:\ by default windows always make a swap in the c:\ but that c:\ drive is not the fastest partition of the system.

It is recommended to use a different drive then the windows drive for better performance.

I hope these explanation are not to hard to fallow, its easier to do it for me then explain it  55%% %4 %4

thanks! it seems to be helping. it seems like it takes longer for things to start initially, but once it is running it seems to be running faster

I wish i knew more about IT than i do.

like how do you know how much memory you have etc?

My computer suffers from 'Idle prone activity'. basically when you click something it goes "I rather do my 'system idleness' than the thing your trying to do user"... It also closes my games down when i am in a middle of something. Did this with sims 3 so much i can't bare to play it anymore. as you have to save every fucking day in sim time. I also tried to play age of empires two ex[anssion pack and it didn't allow me to even build a freaking house on it, it just closed the program down. Everytime i play Mnecraft, it has a fit and java says there has been an 'internal' error. Whatever that fucking means. I Just want it to play my games, do what i say it to do, and be a good computer. What do i get? a fucking rebelling teenager of a machine.
