I discussed this "inhale" style with my vocalist.  He says he can only do inhale style.  He's been doing it for about 14 years.  He wants to learn to do the exhale style, but every time he tries it hurts, so he stops.  I told him about the "vocal paralysis" thing and he has never had any problem or discomfort with the "inhale" style.  I wouldn't worry about it, if you don't have any strain or pain.  He's a taller 6 foot type guy too, so I don't know if that makes a difference with vocal chord size or not. :-\

Check out his vox if you'd like.  The recordings are pretty crappy, but you can hear his vox anyway.

now that i read up on it im not sure it can cause it:

Paralysis of the vocal cords may occur when one or both vocal cords or folds does not open or close properly. A common disorder, this condition can range from relatively mild to life threatening. When one or both vocal cords are paralyzed, the open cord(s) allows food or liquids to slip into the trachea and lungs. A person may experience difficulty swallowing and coughing. Vocal cord paralysis may be caused by the following:
head trauma
neck injury
stroke
tumor
lung or thyroid cancer
certain neurological disorders, such as multiple sclerosis or Parkinson's disease
viral infection
Treatment may include surgery and voice therapy. Sometimes, no treatment is necessary and a person recovers on his/her own.

Try watching "The Zen Of Screaming" its an instructional screaming video, the vocals aint really death metal, but she teaches alot of warm ups and has alot of hints on how not to hurt yourself :)

find something that doesnt hurt your voice and then push it... but dont OVER push it...

here is the big deal... DONT STRAIN... when you strain your vocal chords during screaming, instead of your vocal chords flapping around freely, you are tightening them - causing them to actually FEEL the abuse of the scream... its like a rubber band, only when you tense up it becomes dry and rotted, so under enough pressure it rips!

just imagine getting raped by tyrone in prison... you can either let it slide in, or you can tense up and get yo poo hole ripped   55%%

im a singer singer, so i practice breath support and everything - and also wait 4-5 hours after you wake up til you do that kind of shit, while you are sleeping blood floods into your vocal chords(which is why your voice feels deeper and thicker when you first wake up) and its not good to do anything vocally for a while... it takes 3-4 hours  for the blood to drain out, by then you should have talked enough to warm up your voice!

yeah, i chug slimfast, because milk makes me want to puke so hard - so atleast slimfast has bonus nutrience! but relaxing is the key... if you are relaxed(which is hard to do when you are screaming) then you wont tense up your chords, which would normally cause most of the damage...

my advice...
every day drink 1-2 beers.
And smoke a pack of cigarettes.
Practice in front of mirror. Inhale / Inhale / Inhale.
First 2weeks, your throat is going to hurt you...
then... It's only matter of practice.
I can inhale like guy from Anal Nosorog for about 45minutes.
And it's no problem for me to sing songs from LDOH etc.
:)

Drink, drink, drink, and drink. Be hydrated always, and never try too hard. When I am with my friends we just growl, scream and do gutturals walking around with no problem, but when ever I want to record myself, I try way to hard and my voice gets strained.

Strangely enough I found chamomile and honey tea is fucking magic for the throat! Not the heaviest tipple on the planet but, hey, it gets the job done. But, aye, plenty warm ups is always a good move. Yer vocal chords are like any other part of the body; if you just dive right in and hammer them, they're gonna let you know all about it the next day which kinda sucks if you're touring!!

Also Frijj chocolate milk for that ultra gungy, phglemy sound!!

I don't get this inhale thing. I find exhale gutturals to be the easiest kind of death/grind vocals there is. No I'm not in a band, never have been, so I don't know what it's like after playing 7-8 songs live in a row...

Its so weird i can do exhale vocals quite good, i cant do mad piggy squeals as good as i used to though, but everytime i try to do inhales it sounds just like im sucking in air, not like a mad squeal. My band mates who cant exhale scream/growl at alll can both inhale. Why the fuck cant i do it :-\

Probably because you're used to that kind of technique and your friends to the other one. I can do gutturals and stuff but I cant scream like my friend (who can scream like hardcore and stuff).

Having watched loads of videos, read forums and talked to people, I realised that everyone does it differently and there really isn't much point trying to ask someone to teach you. Even if two people were to use the same technique, they would still sound 100% different, because every voice instrument is unique. It's like talking: people have a different voice even though they use the same so-called technique. Now when it comes to death metal vocals, we have loads of different techniques and trying to categorize those is nearly impossible. So the only way to learn to do vocals is just experiment, experiment and practice, practice. Just make stupid noises and try weird things, you might find something worth using. I've found numerous vocals in that manner.  :)

A great inhaling vocalist is Von Young of Lividity, ive spoken to him how he did it, And he described it to me as inhaling air for a big burp.

i talked with few vocalists too and i have seen "the zen of screaming"...
if you dont come along with low gutturals you can start with screaming, practise and get lower. another advice could be that you have to relax your muscles, imitate a sigh ("ough" hard to describe) and give it pressure from your diaphragm.
i hope i could help. but dont undervalue your breathing technique ;)

I find drinking anything warm soothes your throat and makes vocals less straining.

i'm a vocalist, and i'm in a band. i've been doing exhale vocals for about 6 or 7 years and it's only been this year that i even realized that people inhaled. recently i've started practicing low inhales, high inhales and pig squeals are easy for me but that might be because i'm already an experienced exhaler. what works the best for me is to "sing" along to a cd and try to mimic the sounds that the vocalist is making. like someone else mentioned, everyone's speaking voice is different, so of course everyone's growls, inhales, squeals, etc, will sound different too. as far as exhales, i started off with highs and even raspy vocals, and worked my way down to lower tones. everyone's technique is different: some people say to push from the stomach area or diaphram, others say that if you have to push that you're not doing it right. just try to make sounds along with music and experiment. that's truly the best advice you can get and i'm not the only one saying that. hydrate your throat and don't over do it. oh and one other thing. some people say that if it hurts that you're not doing it right and you're going to fuck up your throat, etc, and to those people i say it fucking hurt my throat a lot when i first started practicing, which was high exhales. now i have an EXTENSIVE exhale range and improving everyday with inhales, and it doesn't hurt anymore. i can practice for hours even without any soreness. i can do high exhales all day long and not have any problems or soreness.

For me, I drink hot chocolate, coffee, or any warm beverage for that matter. It makes it easier for me.
