How to rip FLAC image with EAC and FLAC Frontend
« on: July 25, 2011, 04:00:53 PM »
Insert a disc you wanna rip in your DVD-ROM and open your EAC,if you don't have it yet, follow this link and download the latest version:
http://www.exactaudiocopy.de/en/index.php/resources/download/  . With this version you'll get a FLAC Frontend package witch you'll later need.
Install the version, and you are ready to start with setting you EAC to work properly.
Now when you do all this, you'll get screen looking like that:

So make sure you tag all the areas in blue, and select you DVD rom (brown square)

Then we are going to EAC settings, click EAC in top left corner and pick EAC options or just hit F9.
EAC extraction window:

General window:

Tools window:

Normalize window you leave as default.
File name window, in the „Naming sheme“ window insert  %D\%C\%N - %T (I use this kind of a sheme), the rest you leave as it is.
Character Replacements & Catalog windows you skip/leave as they are.
Directories window; choose your destination folder where you like your rips to be filed.
Write window stays as default.

Interface window:

That completes setting in EAC options windows, click OK button.

Next is drive options, you Click again EAC menu, then choose „Drive options“ or just hit F10.

Extraction window:

Drive window:

Offset /speed window is very essential for your ripping some make sure your inserted data is correct.
Offset numbers for DVD-ROM's can be find on this page: http://www.accuraterip.com/driveoffsets.htm ,  if the automatic detection button doesn't find your correct offset (make sure you check it)

Gap detection window:

Writer winow you leave as default and click OK .

Then we go to Compression options in EAC menu is the third option or you just hit F11.
Waveform window you leave as default.

Extrenal compression window:
You neeed to instal here a FLAC compressor ( Flac frontend), and then list the detionation folder in the box (jus click browse).
Additional line command line enter : -8 -V -T "ARTIST=%a" -T "TITLE=%t" -T "ALBUM=%g" -T "DATE=%y" -T "TRACKNUMBER=%n" -T "GENRE=%m" -T "COMMENT=EAC FLAC-8" %s or for the new versions of EAC; v1.0 beta 2 use this one :
-8 -V %source% -T "ARTIST=%albumartist%" -T "TITLE=%title%" -T "ALBUM=%albumtitle%" -T "DATE=%year%" -T "GENRE=%genre%"

Comment window you leave as it is.

ID3 Tag window is mostly optional but you have to check options:
.
Click OK, and you're done.  Go to the EAC menu again, choose „Profiles“ option, Save profile (or just hit Shift + F2), and save the EAC profile to desired destination.
Now You can rip your CD in lossless.

First you need to detect gaps, and you do it by going to „Action“ menu or hitting F4:

Then you hit „Action“ menu, Test&Copy Image&Create CUE Sheet, Uncompressed:

Select the destination folder again, press save and ripping is on:

You'll have to wait a bit and then youll get this screen:

Click twice ok and go to your destination folder where you must have your .wav file, .cue file, .log file:

Now to compress your .wav file you need your FLAC frontend that did intalled with EAC (only for versions 1.0), on 0.99 versions Frontend is separately installed.
Open the frontend, check „verify“ square, and push your compression level to 8 (same quality as 1-7, but less file size ;)).
Then you press „Add file(s)“ go to the destination folder where your .wav file is and press OPEN.
After  that you press „Encode“ button, and your .wav is compressing to FLAC:

After command prompt window is closed, compression is done, go to your folder and check:

WAV file that is still in the folder you may remove.
And you have perfectly good FLAC image, with

Why do one need to use flac frontend if there is an opportunity to use flac command line encoder and there are screenshots which show how to configure it? You only have to set the correct path to flac.exe and choose "test and copy & and create cue sheet->compressed". And there is no need to detect gaps if you creating image+.cue because EAC detects gaps automatically in this case.

I was having a lot of problem with ripping the past few days for some reason. Windows Media Player refused to work worth a shit (which is unusual for me, since it usually works just fine). Then I tried EAC, but it was going slow as fuuuuck. Then I followed this tutorial (up until the compression part) and it ripped at a nice speed, and I got all 4 albums ripped in the time that it was taking to rip 3 songs before that.

That said: Thank you for this.

Alright, I'm not sure why but, with the same settings I was using before, it just randomly started going REALLY slow. I don't know why. I did EXACTLY what I did before, but it's going really slow now. It's weird because I had previously ripped the CD. I'm just trying to re-rip it so I can upload it as flac for you guys (I had converted it to mp3 320 before for my own use and accidently deleted the original files in the process). Any attempt to rerip it has been met with complete slowness.

Maybe you where ripping in burst mode,as its very fast when you do on burst mode.
But it can easily take 15 minutes for 1 album in secured mode. %4 %4

Maybe... I'll give that a shot and see if it makes any changes. If it wasn't that, then it still confuses me that the speed of the rip would drastically change when it's the same album and the same settings...

Edit: Yeah, the burst mode is definitely going a lot faster than it was before. Same speed as it was on the first rip. I don't remember setting it to that, but 'ey, whatever works.

Pay attention to the X speed, when i ip cd it always rip around 4x or 5x which is very slow but secure.
If i use burst mode i can rip at over 30X so yeah secured mode is way slower, but i am not so sure it is really better.
The log is logging error anyway, most drive will rip as good in burst mode then in secured mode.
But the secured mode will produce less or 0 error on older cds or scratched cds with older drive.

Also maybe you where not testing before and was just ripping, most people here will rip by using (Test & copy image & create cuesheet)

If you are not doing this, you can see your previous rip log and see if this is showing.

Range status and errors

Selected range

     Filename D:\VV\Fleshtized - Here Among Thorns.wav

     Peak level 99.8 %
     Extraction speed 0.4 X  <------------------------------------
     Range quality 100.0 %
     Test CRC 1F6D705D <------------------------------------
     Copy CRC 1F6D705D <-----------------------------------
     Copy OK

Now see my extraction speed in green, its slow but take about 10 minutes per cd,which is the correct approximation time.
I hope this will help even more,if you don`t do a test & copy you should not see the one i made in yellow.
Also the range quality speak for its self. %4 %4
