If you do this without compression, like you said, you get distortion (clipping), and if you do add compression, the track will sound...well... compressed . I wouldn't do this personally because the sound engineer that's mixing the track in the first place knows what he's doing (for the most part). Also, software EQs (built into your media player) do the same thing without destruction of audio (doesn't permanently save the audio so if you make a mistake and save accidentally in Audition the audio is pretty much ruined.)
