Yes, but you can't always listen to that. I've been playing since I was a teenager and over the years I've heard people say all kinds of stuff (This guitar sucks..., That amp sucks..., Those pickups suck..., etc). And some people who say shit about gear have never actually tried it themselves; their basing their opinions on what they have heard or read.
The important thing is how YOU as a player feel about the gear. I've played everything from cheap, bottom end gear to gear with price tags in the thousands of dollars; but I always make a decision based on how it feels to ME, not someone else.
So if you like it, who cares what anyone else says about it?

That's not necessarily true. If your guitar or equipment sounds like shit, doesn't matter how good you play it's still going to sound like shit. Most people can't really tell if it sounds like a real amp or not. If they know you're using a Line 6 POD they will say it doesn't sound like a real amp out of ignorance and stupidity. People like to make comments and bring other people down. Unless they are industry professionals who have a trained ear they aren't going to know jack shit . On the other hand you can make it sound more realistic if you're recording with the pod and you do multiple tracks and use different amps and settings on each track. No way in hell they'll be able to tell the difference if you do it just right

I agree with you bro. The gear will definitely affect how you sound. What I meant by "It's the player that makes the difference, not the gear" is the gear will have no effect on how well you play. I've jammed with guys who would say things like, "If only I had this guitar or that amp, I'd be able to play better."
But as far as sound, you are absolutely right Phil.

Right I misread that. The best gear wont make you play better, and if you don't play good to begin with it'll still sound like shit ... But on the other hand better gear has been known to inspire you to take your skills to new heights or at least play more often. Practise makes perfect as they say
